ADHD? Are We Making This Up? - Part 1

Posted by Scribeman01 on October 3rd, 2007

Yesterday, I received a posted comment from Rebecca, regarding a gentlemen named Bob Collier, a stay-at-home parent in Australia that has written several books about ADHD. Specifically, Mr. Collier feels that ADHD is a artificially made-up term, and that the issues that an ADD or ADHD person are having can be interpreted in a lot of different ways. He cites different studies, including those of the brain that do not correlate with a defined ADHD disorder. He feels that the pharmaceutical companies have exploited the term ADHD and turned it into a so-called cash cow for their own monetary gain and greed. He talks about teachers that also tap into the ADHD term that would rather drug their students into submission, rather than to correct their so-called problems. (I am sure there are teachers that would love to discuss this notion with him further.) :-)

Rebecca, a successful mom of three children and business professional was not diagnosed with ADHD until her late 30’s. She went through a personal hell, which I will include in the next post (see her comments in the about link of this blog) . It is a fascinating story, and passionately underscores why Mr. Collier may be really the one that is in denial. If you peruse the contents of his website (linked in first paragraph), you will see why she is so upset with him and why we, in the ADD-ADHD community need to challenge his and other “experts” in denial.

Many of them may also believe that Cactus plants grow on the planet Pluto. :-)

Thank you for both replies and your thoughts Jeff! If the web visitors here will link on your name/website with your comment, they will see from your full writing, that if we use the same logic as Mr. Collier about denying ADHD, then the world is really flat, and that Mr. Collier (if he lives in another part of the world), like ADHD, he too is also a figment of our imagination.

Hi, thanks so much for posting this on your blog. Unfortunately these Naysayers really do have such a very strong and influential presence. Dr. B has spoken on the Senate and house floor, as well as the FDA, and has been in front of severl european governments creating many of the challenges we face to be recognized, or even diagnosed or treated effectively.

His voice, even as uninformed as it is, carries a lot of weight and it is mainly because we the adults have only really been acknowledged in the past decade or so and there is still so much more to learn

It is imperative that we take a united Stand and fight for the recognition, and our rights! More than one voice carries a lot of weight, and the burden is less to carry!
If we continue to ignore people like him, our rights become lessened. The challenges become more difficult.
